Professor Dohyoung Kim is running the "HOT TEAM Class," an industry-academia project embedded in the Technology Management course for the fall 2026 semester, in partnership with the impact investment firm Crevisse Partners. The course takes the form of project-based learning (PBL), in which the partner firm poses a real question from its global operations and practitioners take part in both instruction and evaluation. The central question is how an energy transition that leaves no one behind can be achieved: students analyze actual electricity supply gaps and energy poverty in developing countries, then design distributed clean energy business models that secure access for low-income populations without relying on public subsidies. Wonyoung Kim, a founding member of Crevisse Partners and a specialist in blended finance, serves as the practitioner mentor, and the semester includes a site visit to the firm's Seongsu-dong headquarters and a final presentation judged by company executives and external reviewers. Professor Kim noted that the course focuses on building the capacity to make well-grounded, data-based decisions where profitability and social inclusion come into conflict.
Professor Dohyoung Kim visited the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) on 28 August 2026 to study how clearing, settlement and credit risk are managed in the U.S. wholesale electricity market. The visit was part of a research project commissioned by the Korea Power Exchange, for which Professor Kim serves as principal investigator, and was conducted jointly with KPX staff. As more Korean companies begin purchasing electricity directly from the wholesale market, ensuring payment stability has become a pressing policy question, and the visit sought first-hand insight from an operator with long experience of comparable arrangements. The discussion covered how collateral requirements are calculated for market participants, how credit exposure is monitored on a continuous basis, and what procedures apply when a participant defaults.
Professor Dohyoung Kim delivered an invited lecture titled "National R&D Evaluation and Performance Management: From Evaluation Committee Operations to the IP-ization of Qualitative Outcomes" on 25 August 2026 as part of the 4th NRF-KU R&D Policy Expert Program hosted by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The lecture was delivered within a training program aimed at improving the evaluation of national R&D programs. As national R&D indicators have come to rely heavily on quantitative outputs such as publications and patents, concerns have grown that they fail to capture the substantive contributions research makes on the ground, and the lecture presented theoretical and empirical approaches to address this gap. The lecture covered dilemmas in the composition and operation of evaluation committees, capacity-building strategies for research organizations grounded in absorptive capacity and open innovation theory, and a method for registering qualitative R&D outcomes as institutional assets through ontology-based clustering.
Professor Dohyoung Kim hosted the Joint Academic Seminar on Climate and Energy Policy on 23 July 2026 at Kookmin University, together with researchers from Seoul National University, Korea University, and Tech University of Korea. Premised on the view that the renewable transition cannot be reduced to a technical problem within a single discipline, the seminar examined physical constraints on the power grid, institutional reform, and social acceptance from a multidisciplinary perspective. Participants — including Professor Jongryul Woo of Korea University and Professor Songhee Kang of Tech University of Korea, along with doctoral, master's, and undergraduate researchers — discussed alignment challenges across technology, institutions, and society, energy governance and policy frameworks, and empirical analyses of emerging energy industries such as power markets, social acceptance, and ESS. Professor Kim noted that the seminar marks the starting point for continued academic exchange and joint research.
Professor Dohyoung Kim chaired a special session titled "Industrial Clusters in the Climate Transition: Industry, Market, and Technology" at the 2026 Summer Conference of the Korea Society for Innovation Management and Economics (KOSIME), held from 2 to 4 July 2026 at Maison Glad Jeju. Organized under the Society's Special Committee on Climate Change Policy, the session was premised on the view that responding to global carbon regulation and RE100 pressures requires structural transformation at the level of industrial clusters themselves, rather than emissions reduction by individual firms alone. Discussions addressed decarbonization pathways for emissions-intensive heavy and chemical processes such as steel, the rationalization of electricity market governance including RPS reform and corporate direct PPA procurement, and microgrid optimization together with non-wires alternatives (NWAs) as responses to renewable intermittency — pointing to the need for integrated solutions spanning industry, market, and technology.

Professor Dohyoung Kim contributed a column titled "The Heavy Electrical Equipment Supercycle Is Only Beginning" to the AX column series of the Korea Society for Innovation Management and Economics on 11 July 2026. The column examines a paradox within the current boom: although surging AI data center investment and aging grid replacement demand have driven the market for ultra-high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and GIS to historic highs, order backlogs are not translating into output. Professor Kim locates the constraint not in facilities but in the shortage of skilled personnel, arguing that domain knowledge embodied through years of field experience — insulation design, arc-quenching judgment, and similar tacit expertise — now functions as a structural ceiling on production capacity. As a response, he proposes an AX (AI transformation) strategy that converts the engineering causality embedded in expert judgment into rule-based data models, with explainable AI (XAI) as a precondition for adoption in power infrastructure settings. He further argues that when operational data collected from equipment deployed worldwide is treated as a non-replicable asset and extended into predictive maintenance and asset lifecycle services, heavy electrical equipment firms can shift from equipment suppliers to providers of intelligent infrastructure services.
Professor Dohyoung Kim has been appointed as a member of the Working Committee on Climate and Renewable Energy Costs at the Korea Power Exchange (KPX), serving from January 2026 through December 2028. Established under the Electricity Market Operation Rules, the committee reviews how renewable-related costs are reflected in the electricity market, including reference prices for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and the annual settlement of compliance costs borne by supply obligation entities. Professor Kim attended the committee's first meeting of 2026, held on 18 June at KEPCO's South Seoul Regional Office, where discussions addressed the proposed reference price calculation and the direction of RPS reform. As cost allocation and settlement mechanisms remain a central issue in electricity market governance amid the expansion of renewables, he plans to draw on his research experience in energy policy to contribute to institutional improvement over the three-year term.
